From our very first jacket back in 2017, we've been honing our expertise to become a full-fledge production house. After experimenting on a wide range of categories - mostly tricky fabrics like silk and leather, we decided to focus our sole R&D effort on leather products. While alternatives are on the rise, most alternatives such as vegan leather are highly processed with around 1/3 up to 1/2 the composition made of plastics and plastic derivatives, or rubber as a foundation (eg: cactus, mango, coffee, pineapple, and even something called Mirum). Unlike these, lab grown alternatives such as Mylo and Fungiskin seem more promising without a plastic base, yet their current manufacturing process remains unscalable for real-world applications.
Unfortunately, industry experience has taught us that the majority of finest leather, from Coach's to Gucci's to Hermes's, often require plastic embossing or coating finish to enhance both their look and durability (eg: Epsom leather). Because most alternatives do not possess the same quality versus traditional leather, a plastic finish is almost always warranted.
Additionally, the industry remains susceptible to a massive amount of material waste plus environmental pollution throughout their supply chain - from raw materials such as unused fabrics, leather hides, to defected finished products and product samples. Because for the most exclusive brands, only the finest parts of any material will be used to ensure the ultimate perfection. During our sourcing journey, it's not uncommon that we stumbled on entire good-looking skins, having only a middle portion cut out for production. Many times, these skins were intentionally ruined through experiment.
We not only bought them for R&D purpose, but we also repaired or rejuvenated before giving them a 2nd life as finished products, so that they might shine to their fullest. And that is why we continue to develop ready-to-craft materials from recycled fabrics, in turn greatly benefits our clients. While finding the right factories and craftsmen is part of the daily challenge, achieving carbon neutral or with minimal footprint remains a continued struggle due to the nature of the current market. Nonetheless, we believe by consuming better quality products at the highest standards, people can eventually let go of their focus on quantity and embrace sustainability, genuinely.
